Ocean Wave Period from Satellite Altimeters: Validation for Envisat Ra2

چکیده
A model for ocean wave period from satellite altimeter data proposed by Gommenginger et al (2003; [1]) was applied to a dataset of ENVISAT RA2 measurements collocated with moored buoy data for cycle 15 to 26. Although the ocean wave period model was developed for Topex data gathered between 1993 and 1998, we find that the model performs equally well for RA2 Kuband without any need for adjustments to the model. This suggests that the backscatter coefficient for Topex and RA2 are well aligned and that the two altimeters return similar distributions. The model was applied also to RA2 S band data, and shows similar results as for Ku-band but with a small bias. Residual dependences of the retrieved wave period on wind speed and long wave slope suggest ways to improve the empirical altimeter wave period model if cases of low wind with swell can be identified and removed. 1. A SIMPLE EMPIRICAL MODEL FOR ALTIMETER WAVE PERIOD A new algorithm was recently proposed [1] to estimate ocean wave period from satellite altimeter measurements. Based on heuristic reasoning, a simple relationship was postulated between altimeter backscatter coefficient (σ) and significant wave height (SWH) measurements, and wave period, T:

Validation of a Regional Wave Model with Envisat and Buoy Observations
A high resolution North Atlantic and European Wave (NAEW) model has been developed in the Met Office. It is framed in a rotated latitude-longitude grid with a space resolution of 12 km and based on the same physics as the Met Office global wave model except for a new 3 order positive-definite advection scheme and a new Sub-Range Wave Height (SRWH) output variable. The wind forcing comes from a ...
متن کاملComparison of the Met Office Global Spectral Wave Model with Envisat Satellite and Buoy Observations
The Met Office routinely runs a global spectral wave model providing analyses and forecasts of sea state on a grid spacing of approximately 60 km. The modelled two-dimensional wave energy spectra are compared with the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) Envisat satellite observations on a daily basis. Comparisons are also made with frequency ocean wave energy spectra observed by a moored b...
متن کاملImproved description of the ocean mesoscale variability by combining four satellite altimeters
Data from four satellite altimeters are combined with the aim of improving the representation of the mesoscale variability in the Global Ocean. All missions [Jason-1, ERS-2/ENVISAT, Topex/Poseidon interleaved with Jason-1 and Geosat Follow-On] are cross-calibrated previously to produce weekly gridded maps. In areas of intense variability, the rms differences between a classical configuration of...
متن کاملValidation of significant wave height product from Envisat ASAR using triple collocation
Nowadays, spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has become a powerful tool for providing significant wave height. Traditionally, validation of SAR derived ocean wave height has been carried out against buoy measurements or model outputs, which only yield a inter-comparison, but not an ‘absolute’ validation. In this study, the triple collocation error model has been introduced in the validat...
